A mug gift should fit someone's routine
Capacity, cleaning and handle comfort matter more than a generic message printed on the side.

Begin with the drink and the place
A mug gift makes more sense when you know where it will be used. A small cup for coffee at a kitchen table has a different job from a large mug for tea at a desk. Someone who already has a favourite travel cup may not need another lid to clean. Think about an observed routine, then choose a shape that fits it rather than beginning with the printed slogan.
Capacity figures need context. The maximum volume may reach almost to the rim, while the comfortable amount leaves space to lift the mug and add milk. Check the dimensions and compare them with a familiar cup. A very wide mug can take more space on a crowded desk; a tall one may not fit the recipient's usual cupboard or coffee machine.
The handle is part of the present
Look at the space inside the handle and how it joins the body. A sculptural shape can be appealing but awkward to hold. If you can handle the mug in a shop, try a normal grip without assuming that your hand represents the recipient's. When you do not know their preference, a simple accessible handle may be a less uncertain choice than a very small or unusual one.
Check the weight too. A substantial ceramic mug feels different when full, and thick walls add mass before any drink is poured. The rim should look evenly finished and comfortable. Avoid treating a novelty shape as harmless decoration if it is difficult to drink from or clean. The recipient should be able to enjoy the object without managing a small obstacle course at every sip.
Match care to the household
Read the exact product's dishwasher and microwave instructions. Metallic decoration, printing, lids and insulating materials can change what is appropriate. A hand-wash-only design may suit someone who enjoys caring for special pieces, but it can be inconvenient in an office with a shared dishwasher. Do not transfer a care claim from one mug in a range to another model.
If choosing a lidded cup, consider how the parts come apart and whether replacement seals are available. Leak-resistant and leakproof are not interchangeable promises. The maker's intended use should guide whether a full cup can travel inside a bag. A gift should not depend on the recipient discovering those limits after a spill.
For posting, allow proper protective packaging and keep the mug from contacting the outer box directly. If giving it in person, a small note can explain the connection without a long message printed permanently on the surface. A familiar colour, comfortable handle and sensible size can make an ordinary mug considerate. It does not need to announce the recipient's entire identity to become part of their day.
