Care & repair

Deal gently with pilling on a hoodie

Small fibre balls are a surface problem. Remove them carefully without turning a cosmetic issue into a hole.

Check what you are looking at

Pilling appears as little balls of tangled fibres on the fabric surface. It often becomes more noticeable where a hoodie rubs against itself, a bag or a desk. Loose lint sitting on top is different, and a pulled thread is different again. Identify the problem before choosing a tool that could cut or abrade the cloth.

Lay the hoodie on a clean table in good light. Inspect the area around the pills for thinning, a split seam or a snag. If the underlying fabric is already weak, removing the raised fibres can require more care than it would on a sound, dense section.

Use the least force that works

For loose surface lint, begin with gentle removal appropriate to the fabric. A lint roller may collect material that is not firmly attached, but it will not necessarily remove established pills. Do not keep pulling at a stubborn ball with your fingernails. It may be connected to fibres you would rather leave in the garment.

If the maker permits a fabric shaver, follow the tool's instructions and first try a small inconspicuous area. Keep the garment flat and use light pressure. Avoid seams, cords, labels, embroidery and printed graphics. Those raised details can catch differently from an uninterrupted area of cloth.

Pause to inspect the result instead of repeatedly passing over the same patch until it looks brand new. The aim is to improve the surface without removing sound material. If a tool catches, pulls or leaves a thinner-looking area, stop. A hoodie does not need to have a perfectly smooth surface to remain useful.

Change the contact that caused it

Look at where the pilling occurs. A patch under a bag strap suggests a different source of friction from pills across both sleeve undersides. You may be able to adjust a strap or avoid pairing the hoodie with a particularly rough outer layer. There is no practical way to eliminate all friction from normal clothing use.

Follow the garment care label and keep abrasive laundry companions separate where appropriate. An inside-out wash can reduce direct rubbing on the visible surface, but it does not make an unsuitable programme safe. Do not add high heat or harsh cleaning chemicals as a pilling treatment.

Judge the garment by its remaining condition and function. Light pilling alone does not prove that the entire hoodie is worn out. If a new item develops severe surface problems unusually quickly, photograph them and ask the maker before attempting extensive removal. Careful maintenance should extend the usefulness of the clothing, not erase every sign that it has been worn.
